Setting camp & a dry run

The day began in our ´Olympic Studio´. Expedition members showed vigorous support for the Finnish Ice Hockey Team. Unfortunately, this support had no effect. Broken by defeat, we were forced to get on with the day's chores.

Today we had a really good ski training session. We set out to practice our camp-setting and camp-striking routines. We skied out of Resolute, set camp, and went to bed. After a 15 minute `good night's sleep´ we pretended it was morning, got up, and struck camp. This was yet another rude awakening: crawling out of a warm sleeping bag to face these freezing, windy conditions is no joke. But the practice session was useful: we found many little things that needed fine tuning or repair.

The efficiency and realism of our training session was sharpened by a brisk 30-knot wind.

To our surprise, we found that our half-loaded pulkhas were sensitive to crosswinds: they would slew off to one side, even on shallow inclines.

All is well with the Expedition.
